The Play

What we have here is the original screwball comedy – the age-old battle of the sexes.

Bankrupt, with his career on a downslide, egomaniacal Broadway impresario Oscar Jaffe boards the 20th Century Limited and encounters his former discovery and ex-chorus girl Lily Garland, now a temperamental Hollywood star on the same train between Chicago and New York.  Oscar pulls out all the stops to persuade her to return to Broadway in his upcoming show.  It’s a wild ride.

Characters (3 female, 7 male)

Characters:

Oscar Jaffe (M, 40-60).  Larger than life, self-absorbed Broadway impresario.  A combination of Orson Wells and Max Bialystock, whose voice “is a lofty instrument  designed to meet the great moments in life.”

Lily Garland (F, 25-45).  One-time chorus girl discovered by (but since estranged from) Oscar.  Now a Hollywood star – she is stunning, histrionic, melodramatic, glamorous, egotistical…and totally magnetic.

Anita Highland (F, 30-50). Attractive, down-to-earth office manager and girlfriend to Dr. Lockwood.

Dr. Grover Lockwood (M, 30-50) – Erstwhile philanderer and playwright; a man with a very nervous disposition.

Matthew Clark (M, 40-60) – A small, meek and somewhat off-center religious fanatic.

Owen O’Malley (M, 35-60) – A cynical and bellicose Irishman, quick, with charm.

Conductor (M, 40-65) – A dignified, no-nonsense sort of man.

Ida Webb (F, age 35-60) – Tough, efficient, smart-mouthed dame who plays poker with the boys and usually wins.

George Smith (M, 30-40) – Lily’s agent and current boyfriend – “a collar ad with temperament.”  but not slightly naive.

Porter, Beard, Detective, Max Jacobs (M, 30-60) – Four roles to be played by one very good character actor.  A lot of fun.
