The Play
In the 1940s, ex-minister Reverend T. Lawrence Shannon has obtained employment as a tour guide for a second-rate travel agency. On his present tour from Baptist Female College is a teenage girl, Charlotte with whom he’s had relations, and also the starchy Judith Fellowes, who is determined to get Shannon fired as a result. Shannon seeks refuge at a dilapidated hillside hotel on the coast of Mexico, managed by his old friend Maxine Faulk since her husband Fred has died.
A spinster, Hannah Jelkes, arrives with her moribund grandfather Nonno who, despite his failing, is composing his last poem. Hannah scrapes by as a painter and sketch artist while Nonno gives recitations. The play's main axis is the triangle between Shannon, Maxine, and Hannah, and the development of the deeply human bond between Hannah and Shannon over the course of a tropical stormy night.

The Play
Goldsmith’s comic masterpiece has endured and delighted since its first production in 1773. It was perhaps the first “situation comedy”.
Set, and originally produced, during the time of the American Revolution, the play sparkles with period costumes and witty characters.
This comedy of manners is full of tricks and deceptions, love in bloom, a disappearing jewel box and social climbing characters. You’ll meet the affluent Hardcastles, two pair of young lovers and the pleasure-seeking scamp, Tony Lumpkin with renewed delight.
“Comically charged…Goldsmith knew how to make people laugh… A comedy of its time, for all times.” New York Times, 2009

Auditions for TABLE MANNERS
Auditions for Table Manners
by Alan Ayckbourn directed by Bob Wilson
Playing July 14 - Aug 14, 2011
AUDITION DATES: Sat, April 23, 1:00pm - 4:00pm Sun, April 24, 7:00pm - 9:00pm at The Barn Theatre Marin Art and Garden Center, Lagunitas and Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Ross
The Play Table Manners is the initial play on Acykbourn’s comedy trilogy “The Norman Conquests”. This play takes place in the dining room of a slightly shabby household in a small British town, over a weekend. The other plays take place in the sitting room and the garden involving the same characters over the same period, and actors are encouraged to review all three plays for additional character insights.
Norman has arranged for a “naughty weekend” with his sister-in-law, Annie. Since Annie is usually stuck in the house caring for her elderly mother, she has arranged for her another sister and her husband (Sarah and Reg) to come for the weekend and do the caretaking, without exactly telling them what she has planned. Complications pile up with the arrival of Tom, Annie’s largely clueless erstwhile boyfriend; Norman himself and finally Ruth, Norman’s wife.
Norman and Annie’s secret ceases to be secret, as the six share the weekend together.

Auditions for Quilters
by Molly Newman & Barbara Damashekdirected by Linda Dunn
Playing Mar 18— Apr 17, 2011
AUDITION DATES: Sat, January 15, 1:00pm - 5:00pm Sun, January 16, 7:00pm - 10:00pm at The Barn Theatre Marin Art and Garden Center, Lagunitas and Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Ross
The Play Ostensibly the story of a pioneer woman and her six daughters, Quilters blends a series of interrelated scenes into a rich mosaic which captures the sweep and beauty, the terror and joy, the harsh challenge and abiding rewards of frontier life. Illuminating stories contained in various patches or "blocks" with music, dance and drama, the action depicts the lot of women on the frontier: girlhood, marriage, childbirth, spinsterhood, twisters, fire, illness and death. But, with this, there is also love, warmth, rich and lively humor and the moving spectacle of simple human dignity and steadfastness in the face of adversity. In the end, when the various patches are assembled into one glorious, brilliantly colorful quilt, the effect is both breathtaking and magical---and a theatrical masterstroke which will linger in the mind and memory long after the house lights have been dimmed.

St. Nicholas, a Catholic church and school in the Bronx, New York, 1964.
Doubt concerns an older nun, Sister Aloysius, who does not approve of teachers' offering friendship and compassion over the discipline she feels students need in order to face the harsh world. When she suspects a new priest at St. Nicholas, Father Flynn of sexually abusing a student, she is faced with the prospect of charging him with unproven allegations and possibly destroying his career as well as her own. To help build her case, she asks for help from an idealistic young nun, Sister James who finds her faith in compassion challenged, and also the mother of the boy, Mrs. Muller who is protective of her son (Donald), the first black student ever admitted to St. Nicholas.

Auditions for Top Girls
by Caryl Churhill, directed by Cris Cassell
Playing May 21 - June 20, 2010
Setting The action of the play takes place in England in 1982 with a flashback to 1981 and moves from a restaurant to an employment agency to Joyce’s home. In a posh restaurant, Marlene celebrates her promotion to managing director of the Top Girls Employment Agency by throwing a delightful Mad Hatter’s dinner party for an array of mythical and literary women. The guests include a Victorian-era Scottish traveler, a Japanese courtesan turned Buddhist nun, Pope Joan, Geoffrey Chaucer’s Patient Griselda and Dull Gret, the subject of a painting by Bruegel. Crossing cultures, generations and politics, the women’s conversation reveals the choices, sacrifices and joys they have in common with one another as each in her own way has pursued her life goals. Each has given up significant relationships—as mother, wife, lover, nurturer, partner—in order to attain a place in a patriarchal society. After this smashing opening, the rest of the play is set firmly in reality as we follow Marlene in her day-to-day experience as a woman working in Britain during the 1980s. She goes into the office the next Monday morning, gossips with her coworkers, interviews clients and deals with a surprise visit from her niece Angie. Soon the author’s point becomes abundantly clear: this contemporary woman has a lot in common with her party guests, as she faces her sister, her niece, her coworkers and her own choices.
