Auditions for Middle Ages by A.R Gurney, directed by Billie Cox Playing July 16 - Aug 15, 2010 AUDITION DATES Middle Ages is in essence the love story of Barney and Eleanor, paralleled by the relationship of Myra and Charles. As Gurney puts it: “a romantic comedy taking place, like Love Letters, over an extended period of time.” Although generational clash and the dying of the old guard are secondary to the love story, they are newly relevant in 2010 as the pendulum swings from conservative to progressive. The story moves from the 40's to the 70's through vignettes. We see some of the history and social issues as we progress: classism, racism, anti-semitism, the Korean War, the turbulent 60's, the women's movement and free love. The author plays with a number of metaphors: the middle ages, courtly love, Robin Hood , the Prodigal Son and role playing are a few.Characters Barney, is charming and outrageous without being obnoxious. He moves from a dreamer to a dream maker and finally to a resigned but hopeful return to some internal peace. He ages from roughly 16 to 46 years old.
