Synopsis

Middle Ages is in essence the love story of Barney and Eleanor, paralleled by the relationship of Myra and Charles. As Gurney puts it:  “a romantic comedy taking place, like Love Letters, over an extended period of time.”

Although generational clash and the dying of the old guard are secondary to the love story, they are newly relevant in 2010  as the pendulum swings from conservative to progressive. The story moves from the 40's to the 70's through vignettes. We see some of the history and social issues as we progress: classism, racism, anti-semitism, the Korean War, the turbulent 60's, the women's movement and free love. The author plays with a number of  metaphors:  the middle ages, courtly love, Robin Hood , the Prodigal Son and role playing are a few.

Characters
(2 male actors, 2 female actors):

Barney, is charming and outrageous without being obnoxious. He moves from a dreamer to a dream maker  and finally to a resigned but hopeful return to some internal peace.   He ages from roughly 16 to 46 years old.

Eleanor, grows from an awkward outsider longing for security, much abetted by her mother, and, unfortunately gets what she wishes for. However, with her fight to open the Club to women and leaving her  husband, she begins to rebel and finally see her way  back to  Barney. She ages from about 14-44 years old

Charles, is the most poignant character. He is a baronial figure who sees the old world dying around him.  He finally accepts his prodigal son in a way that Myra never does. He ages from loosely 35-40 to 65-70

Myra, moves from social climber to the standard holder of a disappearing world, which even Charles has seen is coming to end. She is still putting slip covers on musty aged furniture and holding the fort against the barbarian hordes personified by Barney. She ages from loosely 35-40 to 65-70
